Bridging the Digital Divide
THE PROBLEM
According to the census bureau, 13.8% of children in Nebraska don’t usually have a computer or digital device to do schoolwork on. 10.9% of kids don’t usually have internet access at home for educational purposes. (source) Nearly all of these children come from low-income families. This phenomenon is called the digital divide, and its effects can be catastrophic. From failing classes to dropping out of school altogether, the digital divide prevents many kids from finding success.
OUR SOLUTION
At Made New Makerspace, we’re addressing the digital divide head-on through providing refurbished laptops and internet access to kids from low-income families. With this technology in hand, children have the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
